Scarborough Smartbox is a structured youth development program that combines boxing mentorship academic support counselling and nutrition in a safe and disciplined environment. Each participant joins a 12 week cohort designed to improve confidence school engagement and physical fitness while building strong relationships with coaches tutors and mentors.

The program serves youth ages eleven to eighteen living or attending school in Scarborough. Youth participate in coached boxing sessions, weekly tutoring, mentorship meetings, counselling access, and a healthy meal at every visit. Cohorts run directly after school to match student schedules and create a consistent routine built around structure discipline and support.

Boxing

Boxing is the core discipline of Smartbox and is delivered by certified coaches who focus on technique movement conditioning and self control. Training is adapted to all skill levels and helps youth build focus determination and respect as they progress through the program. Boxing provides a powerful physical outlet that supports emotional regulation stress relief and the development of positive identity.

Mentorship

Mentorship is integrated into every week of the program and gives participants consistent access to supportive adults who guide them through communication skills discipline leadership and goal setting. Coaches and mentors check in with youth regularly help them reflect on progress and hold them accountable to personal commitments. Youth learn how to build healthy routines manage challenges and improve their relationships at school and at home.

Academic Support

Smartbox includes weekly academic support where students work with tutors on homework literacy numeracy and organization. These sessions are designed to strengthen school engagement build positive study habits and support youth who benefit from additional guidance. Tutors include community volunteers and post secondary students who help participants stay on track with school expectations.

Emotional Support

Participants have access to a trained counsellor who offers up to six confidential one on one sessions during each cohort. Counselling focuses on emotional regulation confidence building stress management communication and personal challenges that may affect school or home life. Sessions are arranged based on individual needs to ensure every youth receives appropriate support.

Nutrition and Meals

Youth receive a healthy meal at every session through our partnership with 5N2 ensuring that basic nutritional needs are met while reducing food insecurity barriers that may impact participation or school performance. Each cohort includes a nutrition workshop that teaches simple habits for healthier daily living.

One Year Membership

Youth who complete the 12 week Smartbox program receive a full year membership to Red Owl Boxing which includes open gym access and supervised drop in sessions. This membership helps maintain momentum and keeps youth engaged in a positive and structured environment long after the cohort ends.

Career Pathways

Older youth receive targeted career coaching through Arrow Group which includes help with resumes interviewing communication skills and preparation for entry level employment. The program aims to place at least ten youth in paid positions each year creating meaningful pathways to independence.

Attendance expectations

Smartbox is built around consistency which means regular attendance participation and respectful engagement are essential. Youth are expected to attend scheduled sessions follow coach and mentor direction and commit fully to the 12 week experience. Families are encouraged to support this structure at home to maximize the benefits of the program.
